All the historic structures in these photographs were at a Soviet prison camp.
The Solovetsky Islands (Solovki) are located on the White Sea. The Arctic archipelago had been a holy place for Russian Orthodox Church since medieval times, and produced a lot of great metropolitans (bishops). Although Solovki had a rich culture and advanced technology, from 1923 to 1939 it was transformed into an island possessed by an evil spirit. At that time, after the Russian Revolution, the place was used as an extermination camp. All sorts of tortures and mass killings were carried out there, and such tortures and killings became organized, and then spread out to the former Soviet Union like a cancer. It is said that the number of camps increased to approximately 10,000. The place could be called Gulag Archipelago written by a Nobel Prize-winning Russian author A. Solzhenitsyn[1]. The Solovki prison camp was a prototype of Gulag (concentration camp) system.
The details of the crimes, some of the most tragic national crimes in human history, are been covered up to this day, therefore they seemed to have disappeared into thin air. Some researchers are investigating former KGB materials, and official documents are being examined, in effort to figure out the number of casualties in Solovki. No one knows the whole picture yet.
In 1992, Solovki was designated a World Heritage Site called the Cultural and Historic Ensemble of the Solovetsky Islands. However foreign media are strictly controlled in this area.
