Quickly zoom photos in iPhoto’s browse mode

macosxhints.com application tips

When viewing photos in the grid layout of iPhoto ’08 running on Leopard, simply press the spacebar to zoom the selected image to full size of image browsing part of the window. Press the Space Bar again to return to the grid view, or use the Left and Right Arrow keys to scroll through your images.

Of course, this seems intuitive if you use QuickLook in the Finder a lot or use the this hint for a similar effect in the Media Browser, but it’s not documented anywhere so I hadn’t tried it.

It’s a huge help to use this function to quickly look more closely at a few images while still taking advantage of the normal grid view to quickly browser through the rest of the image library. No more switching to full-screen mode or zooming in and out just to examine a few images.

[robg adds: I don’t think this is exclusive to iPhoto ’08 or Leopard; I recall it working in older versions of iPhoto…

Quickly update a note’s modification date on the iPhone

Even though the iPhone’s Notes application is a bit featureless, I’ve found it very useful for everyday notes. Usually I need quick access to few of them (one or two notes) just for reading, but as I create a lot of notes each day, notes fall down the list, making it a bit difficult to find them after three or four days.

One obvious solution is to create a title (the first line text followed by a blank line) with plenty of *** or +++ symbols, to make my special notes stand out from others. The other solution I’ve found (together with the first one) is to edit the note each time I read it, so it goes to the top of the list. What I’ve found is that there is no need to actually change anything in the note — you only need to enter Edit mode (tapping on the note so the keyboard is shown). Even if you do not type anything, when you exit Edit mode (tap the Done button), the note is saved and its modification date is updated.

This is not an overly advanced tip, but I’ve f…

Kenwood’s Prodino gets good marks for storage options, not so much for price

The name of this portable digital audio system is partly derived from the Italian word for “great,” and we’re hoping it’s an accurate descriptor, because at a likely price of ¥45,000 ($462) plus another ¥12,600 ($129) for an iPod docking station, this thing isn’t as affordable (or stylish, for that matter) as previous products we’ve looked at. The Prodino (less sexily known as the CORE-A55) tries to earn the price tag by supporting not only USB but up to 32GB of storage on SD or microSD — perfect for that slotMusic collection you wasted your money on. With speaker output at only 10W each, though, we’re thinking a little shopping will find you a more attractive alternative.

If you’re looking for a low-priced laptop option come this holiday season, and you want a little more screen real estate than most netbooks provide, you might want to take a peek at the eMachines eMD620-5777. The 14.1-inch, widescreen, entry-level model comes equipped with a 1.6GHz AMD Athlon 2650e CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, the ATI Radeon x1200 graphics chipset (with up to 1919MB of fancy schmancy HyperMemory), 802.11b/g, a SuperMulti DVD-R/RW drive, and all the ports you know and love. At a totally reasonable $429.99 with Vista Home Basic preloaded, you could certainly do a lot worse. The laptop will be available November 1st at Best Buy, but you can take a look at a quick hands-on we had with a prototype of the eMD620… right this second.

Epson Imaging Devices introduce a-TFT displays that play well in sunlight or darkness

Epson’s developed two transflective amorphous silicon TFT (a-TFT) LCDs for high visibility in a variety of situations on mobile devices. The screens seem to have been developed mostly for gadgets which are used outdoors and in direct sunlight. These new LCDs employ a more traditional, transmissive mode, using backlighting in darker or indoor settings, but are also capable of utilizing a reflective mode, which can harness bright sources such as sunlight to increase clarity. The reflective mode not only increases visibility on the screen, but also reduces the need for backlighting, thus conserving power. The displays will be available in 3 and 3.5-inch sizes, and samples of the screens are said to be shipping before the end of the month.

Philips GoGear — now in glorious color!

It’s true, we were less than impressed with Philips GoGear MP3 squares back when they were first released, so the announcement of the GoGear 2940 isn’t really going to shake the foundations of the universe. It’s essentially the exact same player as the previous models (MP3, WAV, and WMA playback, built-in EQ, USB 2.0 connectivity, voice recording capabilities, FM tuner) with the addition of a color OLED screen which displays album art or photos. There’s something mildly endearing about them, though, isn’t there? No details on price or availability.
